Dedicated to justice, sustainability, and peace through deep learning and connection, Ed’s scholarship and teaching examine the philosophical, theoretical, and practical aspects of transformative learning for planetary and social change.

He is passionate about sustainable peace leadership (social equity, planetary stewardship, sustainable growth and development) holistic education, and peace education.

His most recent books, Pedagogy of Vulnerability and Culturally Competent Engagement: A Mindful Approach, focus on mutual self-disclosure and various contemplative practices to deepen connection in relationships. Currently, he is the editor of the Journal of Peace.

This book encourages mindfulness as a tool for personal growth and for intentional action for the purpose of social change. The Self-Other-Systems approach challenges readers via concrete learning exercises that nudge one along the life-long path of culturally competent engagement.

This book is a collection of case studies and research focused on the pedagogy of vulnerability.  It is meant to be an example of pedagogical vulnerability, wherein the authors work to explicate the most intimate and delicate aspects of the varied pedagogical journeys, understandings rooted in vulnerability, and those of their students, colleagues, clients, and even adversaries.

Journal of Peace Education (2022-) 

Journal of Peace Education is transdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and intercultural. It aims to link theory and research to educational practice and is committed to furthering original research on peace education, theory, curriculum and pedagogy.  The Journal understands peace education as education for the achievement of non-violent, ecologically sustainable, just and participatory societies.  Ed is the acting editor-in-chief of the Journal of Peace Education.

Re-envisioning higher education: Embodied paths to wisdom and social transformation (2013)

This co-edited book talks about contemplative methods, such as meditation, qigong, yoga, arts, and dance, that help people gain wisdom and balance in their lives and enhance their ability to be reflective and transformative educators and learners. Ed served as an editor and contributed a Pedagogy of Vulnerability chapter to this collection.

Examining learning in the course, Inclusive Leadership for Sustainable Peace. Journal of Peace Education (2020) 

This co-written research article examines an undergraduate, introductory course, ‘Inclusive Leadership for Sustainable Peace’ aimed to cultivate sustainable peace leaders by inviting students to clarify their own core values and by local leaders, global initiatives, and global peace leaders.  Findings indicate that participants gained personal value clarification, career clarification, and a deeper understanding of their power to make a difference.
